Four Reasons Why Canva Should Not Be Used to Design a Logo

Canva graphic with text below it: Great for many graphics! Not great for logos!

I use the graphics program Canva to create certain elements, such as charts and graphs. However, I would never use Canva to design a logo. Here are four reasons why:

  1. Lack of Originality Canva offers pre-made design elements to a wide range of users. Do you really want your logo to resemble those of other businesses that have used similar Canva elements? Of course not!

  2. Graphic Limitations While you can technically create an original logo in Canva using a font paired with basic lines and shapes, there are significant creative limitations. A true vector drawing program, such as Adobe Illustrator, allows for greater creativity and originality.

  3. Ownership Since Canva's logo templates are customizable and accessible to anyone, your rights to the logo are non-exclusive, meaning you cannot register it as a trademark.

  4. Professionalism A logo is a critical component of a business's visual identity. Using a platform associated with quick and easy design can convey a less professional image. Investing in a professionally designed logo demonstrates a commitment to quality and brand authenticity.

I still love Canva, though!

Once a logo is designed in Adobe Illustrator and approved, the files are exported for print and web, and a style guide is created. I often set clients up with a Canva Pro account. There's an excellent tool called "Brand Hub" in Canva Pro that allows organizations to access all their logo formats, brand colors, and fonts, enabling them to easily create social media graphics, flyers, and other marketing materials while maintaining brand consistency.

So, while a logo should always be designed in a vector-based drawing program like Adobe Illustrator, Canva can be a great tool for creating marketing materials afterward—as long as the style guide is followed. This approach is particularly beneficial for organizations with limited design and marketing budgets.
